This is a lovely artists proof, hand-coloured etching of a Scarce Swallowtail Butterfly. This etching's colours are still very vibrant, a very attractive piece and a lovely example of Koster's work. The Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) is a butterfly belonging to the family Papilionidae. It is also called the sail swallowtail or pear-tree swallowtail. These swallowtail butterflies inhabit gardens, towns as well as the countryside, in fields and open woodlands. They are found in places with sloe thickets and particularly orchards. In the Alps they can be found up to altitudes of 2000 m, but usually they prefer foothills and lower levels.
David Koster was a well known printmaker and naturalist. Koster was born in London 1926 and attended the Slade School of Fine Art in the 1940's He was a founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists in 1964. He exhibited there many times and also at the Royal Academy. He is also the subject of a book by Christine Johnson. He has become a very collectable artist.
