Very attractive good sized impressionist still life, attributed to Henri Frederic Boot, the Dutch Impressionist painter. The painting depicts a lovely pink bunch of large pink Dahlias in a green mottled vase and a couple of hydrangea heads in another vase, to one side and a different shaped vase to the other side, all placed on a tray placed sat on a table. The arrangement for the still life in very pleasing and skilfully placed, just slightly off centre to the LHS of the canvas. There is great depth to this painting with lovely tones of blues and greens to the background and contrasting pink flowers. A really interesting piece and carries all the hallmarks of Boots style and still life subject 

A Dutch Painter and printmaker, mostly active in Haarlem. Henri Boot developed into a painter of carefully elaborate still life’s and portraits. The still life’s in particular – often depicting random corners of Boots cluttered Studio, and can be seen as representative of his artistic vision.

According to Boot, a painter should focus on the beauty of everyday reality – the subject depicted was of less importance. This view bears witness to Boot’s strong affinity with the movement of 1880, a literary group including authors like Lodewijk van Deyssel.

Boot’s philosophy can also be traced back to classical notions of detachment and equanimity. Boot had a remarkably strong impact on student and artist Kees Verwey. Verwey joined Boot in his view of still life as the highest form of painting. Still life not only placed strong demands on the artist’s powers of observation, but also on his ability to depict objects’ spatial characteristics in a clear and intimate arrangement

He was a pupil of the painters Dirk Gerard Ezerman, Alexander Henri Robert van Maasdijk, Rein Miedema, Barent Johannes Cornelis Weingärtner in Breda, and Johan Hendrik Wijtkamp. 

He became a member of the Kunstkring Haarlem in 1905, the artist club De Onafhankelijken in 1912 (board member in 1917), Guild of St. Luke in Amsterdam in 1931, the Kennemerse Kunstenaarskring (K.K.K.) from 1932, and chairman of Kunst zij ons doel in 1939. 

Boot's work was included in the 1939 exhibition and sale Onze Kunst van Heden (Our Art of Today) at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae from 1943 to 1961.

Boot was infamous for being a member of the Nederlandse Kultuurkamer [nl] and member of the Kultuurraad during the German occupation 1941-1945.
